Canon PowerShot SD1100IS – A Solid Ultra-Compact Camera

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you are looking for a solid yet ultra-portable compact point-and-shoot digital camera, then the SD1100IS model by Canon will definitely suit your needs. I am by no means a professional photographer, but I have seen lots and lots of consumer digital cameras, and this one simply delighted my shooting experience. In this article I will try to describe the pros and cons of this gadget and hopefully this will ease your buying decisions.

To start off, here are the strengths I managed to pinpoint:

- 8 megapixel image sensor with DIGIC 3 processor. While not up to the latest DIGIC 4 technology, the images are still excellent for the needs of a non-professional photographer.

- Most of the body is made of aluminum. I once dropped it outside on solid concrete and nothing happened (well, except of some nasty scratches on the case). A plastic cased camera would have shattered to pieces.

- Logical user interface. Anyone can figure out how to work its basic functions without even touching the user manual. If you have ever operated a digital camera you will know what to do with this one.

- The Macro mode produces stunning pictures

- Optical viewfinder, particularly useful when the sun is shining so brightly that you can’t see anything on the LCD, or when you want to turn the screen off to conserve battery.

Cons and limitations

- No manual control over aperture, shutter speed and focusing. These belong to higher end cameras, you get what you pay for.

- Annoying noise starting at ISO 400, which makes taking pictures in the dark rather impossible

- Very slow auto-focus and shutter speeds. Quite impossible to shoot moving targets.

- Shutter lag increases heavily if you are using the flash mode. You can lose up to several seconds waiting for the flash to charge.

The overall impression I had was great, I would rate it 5 out of 5. Even though it has some limitations, I didn’t find them to be too annoying and didn’t affect my shooting experience. As a final piece of advice, I would recommend buying a few spare rechargeable batteries and at least one 8 GB memory card, since the camera comes with a tiny 32MB one.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Professional (as well as aspiring professionals) photographers usually resort to single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras for greater control over the manual configurations. SLR cameras enable photographers to have almost complete control over the modes, features and configurations of their cameras to produce the best shot possible.

One of my all time favorite SLR cameras is the Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera. This new model comes with a wide range of features, many of which were previously only available on more expensive models. Here is a quick look at why the Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera is a winner.

This model has a powerful 15.1MP sensor. This high resolution (together with the DIGIC 4 processor) enables the accurate and natural reproduction of colors on the picture taken. The 18-55mm lens that is included with this model does a pretty good job, but on high resolution, the 15.1MP sensor works best with the EF 70-200mm and other similar lenses.

Regardless of the camera, I am always very appreciative of a huge display. The Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera has a large 3″ display that works like a dream. The surface of the display is anti-reflective, displaying crisp previews even under bright sunlight and dark lighting conditions (it has level of brightness adjustments).

This model is surprisingly light and feels pretty good on my grip. It has the same casing as the XSi model and is a little smaller compared to many other SLR cameras. The buttons are well placed and Canon camera users will have little trouble getting used to this model. This camera also records HD videos and can be easily connected to other devices (it comes with a HDMI port).

Different 3-Plus Megapixel Digital Cameras

Image : http://www.flickr.com

3-Plus-Megapixel Model

- with a two-section body that allows the lens to be swivelled and excellent optical quality that is outstanding close-up, this camera has become a popular choice.
- when choosing a camera, test all its features – this main switch is inconvenient.
- a pop-up flash is not obscured by lens accessories.
- a 50x enlargement from a 9 MB file (from a 3-megapixel camera) may not show much more detail than a 6 MB file, but detail is sharper and clearer.

Casio QV3000

Looking like an ordinary camera, this model offers a 3x zoom delivering good image quality to a 3-megapixel sensor. The camera is relatively inexpensive and it is easy to use, if somewhat large and bulky.

Olympus 3030Z

A well-specified camera offering many functions and capable of producing high-quality results of 3.3 megapixels with a 3x zoom lens. It is quite a small camera, however, and some controls may be fiddly to use, but it is a popular choice.

Canon

With its 4-megapixel sensor, 3x zoom, and a rugged body, this capable camera is a good choice for more serious work. It is also easy to use with a good range of exposure controls at its disposal. It also takes high-performance flash units.

Fuji FinePix 4900 Zoom

Capable of delivering an interpolated file of some 4 megapixels from a 2.4-megapixel sensor, this camera produces excellent results from a wide range of controls. It has a 6x zoom lens, handles well, and is very reasonably priced.

Casio QV4000

This is a sturdy, capable camera with a good range of features, such as spot metering and a wide selection of scene modes. Delivering nearly 4 megapixels, it is capable of fair-to-good-quality images from its 3x zoom lens.

Ricoh RDC-1500

This model looks unusual but is practical and easy to use. The 3-megapixel images from its 3x zoom can be of very good quality, while its close-up ability allows it to focus as close a 1cm (M in). Emails can be sent from the camera.

How to Choose a Digital Camera

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The main thing you need to ask yourself when buying a digital camera is this: “Just how deeply down this rabbit hole do I want to go?” There are some simple digital cameras that are ready to go right out of the box. On the other end of the spectrum, there are amazingly complex cameras that will require either prior experience or extensive training to even begin to be useful to an amateur photographer. This range of available products is one of the most exciting aspects of digital photography. Once you decide which level you’re interested in, you will have a good idea of what kind of camera you should buy.

There are many places to buy cameras. Any good retailer is going to offer you some help in choosing. Electronics stores have specially trained employees who can talk through your situation with you and help you decide what to buy. Just don’t let their commission get in the way and cause them to sell you more than you need.

The actual camera manufacturers offer a wealth of information as well. Each company offers a wide range of cameras, from those simple ones to the very complicated, and you can find helpful descriptions easily by using the websites of Cannon, Kodak, Nikon, etc.

A third source of helpful information is from third-party sources. This refers to other websites and groups dedicated to photography and cameras. A quick Internet search will return many results for consumer websites that describe and review products such as digital cameras. You can read up on your choices there and see which ones they recommend.

In the end, remember that the choice is yours. While there are many resources available to help you, you must make the final decision for yourself. Get a simple camera for family snapshots or get a technological wonder that will allow you to stay on the cutting edge of professional photography. Dive in as deep or as shallow as you want to go. Consider your overall long-term goals as a photographer, and choose the camera that best suits them.
